Château Lafite Rothschild history
In the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who had inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.
When Lafite was introduced to the court of Versailles, demand for the wine reached record heights.
The Marquis de Ségur became known as “The Prince of Vines”.
When Baron James de Rothschild acquired Lafite in 1868, the château, its terroir, and its wines were already storied.
The château earned Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1855.
150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate the vineyard from the marshes.
They, their children, and grandchildren, as well as the families of winegrowers who joined them, worked painstakingly to protect this flawless creation bequeathed to them by nature.
The estate has been in the hands of the Rothschilds ever since.
Over the years – which soon became decades, then centuries – following Baron James’ arrival, his children, and their children, and their children in turn, have stewarded the château through both turbulence and accomplishment.
