In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

This transformation created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Then in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it earned medals still prominent on its labels.

Subsequently, the family retained the château until 1998.

Then Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

1972 wine price – Château Cheval Blanc 1972

The 1972 Château Cheval Blanc is a well-aged Bordeaux blend from a challenging vintage, generally considered an elegant and pleasant drinking experience now

Cool temperatures and record rainfall in August marked the 1972 vintage.

Consequently, the cool weather all year long considerably delayed phenolic maturity and ripeness in the grapes.

As a result, producers experienced an exceptionally late harvest.

In addition, they achieved extremely low yields – just 17 hectolitres per hectare.

Nevertheless, despite the very late harvest, people criticised the wines in their youth.

However, Château Cheval Blanc 1972 has aged well and surprises many after more than 50 years in bottle.

Moreover, reviewers and the producer alike have noted that this wine aged better than they initially predicted.

In fact, they describe it as having great aromatics with notes of pot pourri, dried red flowers, forest floor, dried leaves, light leather, and delicate black tea.

Furthermore, the wine features a medium body, good acidity, and fully resolved, silky tannins.

Additionally, flavours include subtle plum, jasmine lift, and autumnal earthy tones.

Ultimately, it offers an ethereal mouthfeel with a balanced and sophisticated delicacy.

Finally, they describe the finish as elegant.
