Château Latour is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the Enclos, Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.

The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect of Château Latour.

It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) can achieve optimal expression in terms of colour, richness and freshness.

These wines need time – often a decade – before they begin to be ready for drinking.

Château Latour is also known for having the ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.

The cool spring delayed the budbreak.

May brought sunny and warm weather, allowing growth to catch up.

They recorded the start of flowering on 1 June.

A cold, damp period then followed, which caused flower abortion and uneven grape size, reducing the forecasted harvest by almost half.

July delivered sunny and sometimes very hot weather, with a few thunderstorms.

August maintained moderate temperatures.

September began well, but then temperatures fell with heavy thunderstorms and some hail.

However, excellent conditions allowed the harvests to take place from 30 September–15 October.

The musts presented superb sugar levels (sometimes higher than in 1970!) and high levels of acidity.

Critics consistently praise the 1971 Latour for its remarkable freshness, elegance, and complexity even after over 50 years.

Expect a complex bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite, cedar, tobacco, and earthy or truffle notes, with occasional hints of mint, liquorice, or cola.

They describe the wine as medium-bodied, elegant, and well-balanced with vibrant acidity and finely chiseled, melting tannins.

It offers a core of sweet, ripe fruit and a long, complex finish.

The 1971 Latour has reached full maturity and sits in a perfect drinking spot, with many critics noting that well-stored bottles can continue to provide pleasure for many more years due to their structure and balance.
