In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

This transformation created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Then in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it earned medals still prominent on its labels.

Subsequently, the family retained the château until 1998.

Then Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

1970 Château Cheval Blanc

The 1970 Château Cheval Blanc stands out as a renowned, fully mature red Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Émilion appellation.

It is known for its elegant, complex character and still-soft texture.

Furthermore, after two very difficult years, 1970 emerged as a good vintage in Bordeaux.

In addition, winemakers primarily blend the wine with Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

Moreover, experts describe the 1970 Cheval Blanc as “soft, rich, delicious,” “fragrant,” and having a “velvety palate.”

Specifically, common aromas feature plum, cherry, truffle, herbs, tobacco, forest floor, dried lavender, and spices.

Notably, critics recognise it for its remarkable finesse and balance, with the late Michael Broadbent, a renowned wine critic, rating it as “more than first rate.”

Overall, Château Cheval Blanc 1970 impresses with its polished and well-balanced character, offering plenty of freshness and a fine tannic texture.

As a result, collectors highly prize the 1970 Cheval Blanc as a historical vintage from one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates.

Although  the 1970 differs from the estate’s truly “legendary” vintages, such as the 1947 or 1961, collectors and enthusiasts still regard it as a highly esteemed wine.
