1967 Chateau Musar stands as a marker in history, as it brought Chateau Musar and Lebanese wine to the attention of the wider public at the 1979 Bristol Wine Fair.

Journalist Roger Voss and head of Christie’s Wine Department Michael Broadbent delighted in Serge’s wines, with Broadbent famously citing the 1967 as his “find of the fair.”

Broadbent first tasted the wine in the late 1970s and early 1980s, noting it as “dry but rich and fruity.”

A later tasting described it as having “rosehip maturity” and still some tannin.

The 1967 also presents a “taste of history,” with a surprisingly fresh and elegant character.

Serge Hochar had just returned from his winemaking training in Bordeaux and experimented with a lighter style of Musar.

The 1975, 1969 and 1967 Chateau Musar styles resemble each other and appear to be more Cinsault dominated.

Therefore they display more tawny orange in colour, are more forward than the 1970 and 1966 vintages with an extraordinary bouquet and taste.

First, the colour shows a pale brick-red to tawny orange hue.

Then the aromas reveal a complex, multi-layered bouquet featuring soft red fruit, spice, leather, game meat, and smoky notes.

Subsequently, as it opens up, it can develop notes of toffee, caramel, forest floor, and orange peel.

Then, on the palate, delicate but persistent flavours include mature raspberry, baked cherry, dried loganberry, and savoury notes of game and liquorice.

The mouthfeel lifts by a vibrant acidity that defies its age.

Finally, the finish remains long and elegant, with a smooth, velvety texture and lingering notes.
