Gaucelme de Castillon received an authorisation from Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.
The Mullet family held the estate until the late 17th century.
While the leasing system gradually gave way to direct use of the land, the winemaking situation changed very little.
Alexandre de Ségur acquired Latour as a result of successive marriages and inheritances.
In 1714, a barrel of Latour commanded a price 4-5 times higher than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.
By 1729, the ratio rose to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.
This flourishing trade gradually led the estate to specialise in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares by 1794.
The producers make Château Latour exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average age of 60 years in the “Enclos”.
The heart of the Enclos is the only vineyard that, every year, produces the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect from Château Latour.
These wines need time – often a decade – before they become ready for drinking.
Château Latour also earned a reputation for producing fine wines even in difficult years.

The early 1930s were economically and climatically challenging for Bordeaux.
Therefore 1931 is rarely cited as a classic or long-lived vintage.
However, Latour maintained its rigorous estate standards.
Should we expect books or magazines or mirrors or anything that involves paper or glass to look brand-new when it is, say, 95 years old…?
Older bottles like this often show signs of age, such as slightly damaged capsules and/or scuffed, damp-stained or (part-) missing labels.
This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the wine is faulty or damaged, or that the bottle is a counterfeit or fake.
