Safe Ports in a storm | 1963 + 1969 Taylor’s – 1983 Warre’s (and more)

A Vintage Port is for life, not just for Christmas…

Among our top picks recently are 1963 Taylor’s and 1983 Warre’s.

The ’63 has a Wine Society label (and might have been UK-bottled by them too).

This example of a legendary 20th century Port vintage came from a private cellar in deepest south London.

It’s in excellent condition for its age (like me, says Madeline 😁) and should be a great glass (or six) of Vintage Port.

To paraphrase Churchill: To Warre-Warre 🍷 is always better than to jaw-jaw 🗣.

We have 1983 Warre’s from two sources – examples of which have been sampled and passed as fit for purpose by the Friends of Arden Port Tasting Committee.

A few bottles came from a private Bristol cellar, with more photogenic labels than the bottles from a Midlands cellar.

The Bristolians are full-fledged. The Midlanders have clearly been living in a cooler, damper cellar and the wine is not as progressed – still ruddy in colour and tannic, rather than the tawny shade and mature smoothness of the Bristol bottles.

Only two bottles remain from Bristol – but plenty from the other cellar.

From 1969, there are a few bottles left of the magnificent Taylor’s Very Old Single Harvest Port, which slept in casks for 49 years before being bottled in November 2018.

A very sweet treat (nearly 16% sugar 😬) that was inspected with our good friend Linda Hugo of Beyond Curated.

Other 1960s Vintage Ports via Brook Street include 1966 Dow’s, 1960 Taylor’s, and 1960 Quinta do Noval (another Wine Society bottling).

A friendly reminder: Couriers and warehouses are short-staffed and fulfilling orders much slower than usual. We will do our best to get your order to you as quickly and safely as possible – but please give us at least three days’ notice 🙏.
