An open and shut case | 2003 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

I have always liked La Fleur-Pétrus, not least because it’s more accessible (in the pecuniary sense) than its Pomerol neighbours Lafleur and Pétrus (from which it derives its name).

It doesn’t have the intensity of its namesakes but it’s a charming wine that’s immensely enjoyable (and easy 😋) to drink.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus is mostly Merlot, with a dash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Not much is made – only 3,500 cases per year on average.

About 0.0003% of the 2003 vintage came our way recently…

This six-bottle wooden case of 2003 La Fleur-Pétrus came from a private cellar via one of our trade suppliers.

The striking label might suggest a wine that is best drunk on a yacht.

But even if I was offered an ocean-going glass (or three) of La Fleur-Pétrus, I would have to decline: I can barely swim, and I stay well away from deep water… 🤿

We still have a case of 1999 La Fleur-Pétrus, as well as fine examples of its neighbours Lafleur and Pétrus.

All best-enjoyed on dry land in my experience…
