Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.
For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
They were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his entire life.
In 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
In doing so, he asserted the role and responsibility of the owners of top growths against the all-powerful Bordeaux wine trade.
Hitherto, the merchants received the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
The architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1925 Château Mouton Rothschild is a historic Bordeaux wine that collectors cherish.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild is known for being among the first vintners to château-bottle his wine.
The 1925 vintage in Bordeaux presented a difficult year.
A lack of sunshine and a late harvest characterised it.
In fact, Mouton lost 90% of its harvest that year.
Also in 1925, Baron Philippe de Rothschild oversaw the renovation of the old barrel cellar.
A key historical aspect of this wine is Baron Philippe’s revolutionary decision to bottle the entire production at the Château itself, rather than sell it in barrels to merchants.
This practice, documented on the label as “mise en bouteilles au Château,” guaranteed the wine’s origin.
All top châteaux later followed this trend.
This rare old wine presents a very light red colour, with scents of Asian spice, truffles, tobacco, leather, and caramel.
On the palate, it offers elegance, softness, and refinement but is slightly short on the finish, with hints of red fruit and citrus.
Finally, award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London stocks this super-rare bottle of 1925 Château Mouton Rothschild.
