Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.
For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
They were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his entire life.
In 1924, Baron Philippe decided that all the wine should be bottled at the château.
In doing so, he asserted the role and responsibility of the owners of top growths against the all-powerful Bordeaux wine trade.
Hitherto, the merchants received the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
The spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which the architect Charles Siclis designed, was built in 1926.

The WineTerminator highly praised the 1918 Mouton Rothschild in February 2026.
The 1918 Château Mouton Rothschild is an incredibly rare, historic, and robust Bordeaux wine from the Pauillac appellation.
Producers made it during the final year of World War I.
This vintage, classified as a Second Growth at the time, showcases remarkable longevity and complex, mature flavours.
This historical vintage precedes the era of Baron Philippe’s famous artistic labels and château bottling, which started later.
It represents a significant First Growth wine with immense depth and complexity when mature.
As a wine from over a century ago, its age defines its character, offering a glimpse into the history of this renowned estate.
It serves as a testament to the ageing potential of top Bordeaux wines, especially from a producer like Mouton Rothschild.
1918 presented a challenging year due to World War I.
But Mouton Rothschild, under the vision of the Rothschild family (who acquired it in 1853), produced wines that aged beautifully.
This rare old red wine provides a profound, aged Bordeaux wine experience.
It has a unique and noticeable scent of pine, along with berry, cherry, wet clay, graphite, spice box, cedar, and smoky cheese.
On the palate, the wine offers dark fruit aromatics and incredible persistence, with strong oak and cedar spice.
Finally, award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London stocks this super-rare bottle of 1918 Château Mouton Rothschild.
