Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.
For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
They were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his entire life.
In 1924, Baron Philippe decided that all the wine should be bottled at the château.
In doing so, he asserted the role and responsibility of the owners of top growths against the all-powerful Bordeaux wine trade.
Hitherto, the merchants received the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
The spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which the architect Charles Siclis designed, was built in 1926.

The 1916 Château Mouton Rothschild presents an exceptionally rare and historic red Bordeaux wine.
It’s a historical vintage preceding the era of Baron Philippe’s famous artistic labels and château bottling (which started later), representing a significant First Growth wine with immense depth and complexity when mature.
As a wine from over a century ago, its age defines its character, offering a glimpse into the history of this renowned estate.
It serves as a testament to the ageing potential of top Bordeaux wines, especially from a producer like Mouton Rothschild.
1916 was a challenging year due to World War .
But Mouton Rothschild, under the vision of the Rothschild family (who acquired it in 1853), produced wines that aged beautifully.
This rare old red wine provides a profound, aged Bordeaux wine experience.
The wine has a pale garnet, mostly tawny amber colour, with just a faint remnant of browning red in the centre.
The nose is clean, sweet, and cedary.
The wine’s body and presence in the mouth are remarkable for its age.
The flavour is supple, rich, and subtle, with berry flavors dominant over oak.
