Vintage wine 1990 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1990

In 1990, the blockade that began on 28th September nearly caught the grapes.

The journey of the lorry extended to seven hours northwards via Bcharre, where the Cedars of Lebanon grow.

If a hunch had not suggested that the political situation was turning sour again, the winemakers might never have made the 1990 vintage.

In September 1990, Musar lost the harvest of one vineyard when the Syrians imposed a total blockade on Beirut.

Then, while picking up vital Italian equipment from Beirut airport, a hostile militia stopped him and he had to plead for his life.

“I was fortunate,” said Musar winemaker Serge Hochar.

By the end of September the Syrians had shut all the roads from the vineyards as they closed in on General Aoun.
As it was, the lorries had to make a huge dog-leg up through the Bcharre to avoid the fighting.
Despite the journey, the wine is nervier, tighter, fresher than usual  – “more European than Lebanese‟ as Serge saw it.

Expect high aromatics of rose petals, iron, and fading strawberries.
Wine experts often describe it as “Burgundian” on the palate, with high acidity.
Most bottles now show deep mahogany or tawny rims, signifying maturity.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.

Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
