La Tâche is a Grand Cru vineyard for Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.

The commune of Vosne-Romanée hosts La Tâche, which is a monopole of the winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is a co-owned family estate with vineyards in Vosne-Romanée.

The Marey family bought La Tâche in 1791, who were also vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

Following the French Revolution, the state sequestered La Tâche in 1793.

When Dr. Jules Lavalle published his classification of the Burgundy vineyards in 1855, he placed La Tâche in the highest category.

Until 1932, the neighbouring vineyard of Les Gaudichots could be sold either under its own name or as La Tâche.

Also in 1932, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which owned vines in Les Gaudichots, applied to merge it into La Tâche.

Liger-Belair opposed this, as he owned the smaller La Tâche.

However, Liger-Belair lost, and most of Les Gaudichots absorbed into La Tâche.

Eventually, auctioneers sold Liger-Belair’s vineyards in 1933, including his La Tâche holding, and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti acquired it.

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1958 stands out as a rare and exceptionally valuable Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France.

Although 1958 posed challenges for the region overall, the prestige of the La Tâche Grand Cru vineyard and the winemaking expertise of DRC ensure that well-preserved bottles – like this one from Arden Fine Wines – still provide a pleasure to drink.

Wine critic Neal Martin described a bottle served blind in London in October 2015 as a “pleasant surprise, especially given the vintage.”

The bouquet presented as stately, with a “ferrous tinge,” hints of undergrowth, and chestnut infusing “still bright red berry fruit.”

The palate delivered marvellous delineation, fine tannins, and a slightly citric edge that infused the tart red fruit.

Martin noted hints of bay leaf and minerals on the aftertaste.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti produced 19,456 bottles of La Tâche in 1958.
