Chateau d’Yquem in Sauternes was the only wine to be classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification.

The château has been home to a vineyard since at least 1711, when the estate became fully owned by Léon de Sauvage d’Yquem.

In 1785 it passed to the Lur-Saluces family when Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem married Count Louis-Amédée de Lur-Saluces, whose descendants ran the property for over 200 years.

By the eighteenth century, people already knew it as a renowned wine.

In 2000, Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy purchased d’Yquem after centuries of family ownership.

In 2004, Pierre Lurton, MD at Château Cheval Blanc (another LVMH property), took the reins.

On average, the winemakers create only 65,000 bottles each year at Chateau d’Yquem in Sauternes.

The vineyards never yield more than 900 litres per hectare, compared to the usual 2,000 to 3,000 litres in Sauternes.

The legend is that just one glass of wine comes from each vine.

The 2001 vintage was a picture perfect growing season.

It had a dry month of September (sunny and moderately warm) that was ideal for retaining acidity and freshness.

A few showers came at just the right time.

Then an anticyclone completed a fortuitous set of circumstances that induced widespread botrytisation.

The grapes showed rare concentration and great purity.

This great wine currently displays a light to medium gold colour, sometimes with subtle green reflections.

The nose with has aromas of honeyed marmalade, apricot, crème brûlée, saffron, and candied ginger.

Then, on the palate, it has massive concentration balanced by high acidity.

Ultimately, this spectacular 2001 wine has immense ageing potential, estimated to last 75+ years (drinking well through 2060 and beyond).

In conclusion, Chateau d’Yquem 2001 is clearly a benchmark vintage – one of the best years for Château d’Yquem.
