Chateau Margaux history
Chateau Margaux was originally called “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound).
In a flat region like the Médoc, the slightest “mound” was easily distinguished.
Therefore the greatest wines are always produced on sloping land that ensures good drainage.
At the end of the 17th century, Château Margaux occupied 265 hectares.
Thus a third of the estate was dedicated to vines, which is still the case today.
In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of great Bordeaux growths: 230 barrels of “Margose”.
The 1771 Château Margaux vintage was the first claret to appear in a Christie’s catalogue.
The English Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole bought four casks of Château Margaux.
Thomas Jefferson, United States Ambassador to France, placed an order for Château Margaux 1784.
He wrote that “There couldn’t be a better Bordeaux bottle”.
In 1977 André Mentzelopoulos bought Château Margaux.
The ionic columns that adorn the château reminded him of his native Greece.
In the 21st century, Château Margaux remains in a privileged position: A First Growth classified in 1855, with vineyards that have been shaped by the passing centuries.
Chateau Margaux 1990
- After a mild winter, the flowering was very early but quite long and uneven.
- Then, as in 1989, the summer was exceptionally hot.
- It was so dry that at the end of August the young vines were really suffering from lack of water.
- Therefore the two rainy intervals in September were very beneficial to the final ripening of the grapes.
- Eventually, the picking began on 17th September.
- The harvest lasted almost a month, as the Cabernets ripened much later than the Merlot.
- 1990 was the third in a run of very fine vintages, with 1988 and 1989.
- After the classic 1988 and the rich, opulent 1989, the 1990 immediately caused great excitement.
- The wines of the 1990 vintage, whether Merlot, Cabernets or Petit Verdot, were immediately outstandingly attractive.
- Today, all the aromas and flavours already mingle sweetly together into Château Margaux 1990.
- It is enjoyable now, as it was, in fact, shortly after its bottling.
- It will surely continue to be so over the next twenty or thirty years…
