Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.
For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.
Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.
2004 red wine gift – Château Mouton Rothschild 2004
The 2004 Château Mouton Rothschild stands out as a First Growth Pauillac red wine known for its complex character, significant ageing potential, and unique label featuring a watercolour by King Charles III (at that time Prince of Wales).
2004 marked the Centenary of the Entente Cordiale, which Britain and France concluded on 8 April 1904.
King Edward VII played a prominent part in the agreement, which would herald a genuine alliance during the First World War and forever transform two rival powers into sisters by choice.
The commemoration of such an important milestone in Franco-British relations provided the occasion for many celebrations in 2004, culminating in official visits by both Heads of State.
That is the spirit in which Baroness Philippine de Rothschild approached HRH The Prince of Wales, a talented artist and a direct descendant of Edward VII.
The Prince agreed that the label for Mouton Rothschild 2004 could feature one of his watercolours, inspired by a French landscape, in celebration of the Entente Cordiale.
He has added in his own hand: «To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Entente Cordiale – Charles, 2004».
The 2004 Mouton vintage is considered a success despite the year’s erratic weather, demonstrating balance and elegance.
The blend consists predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 69-73%), with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
This 2004 wine offers a complex bouquet of plum, blackcurrant, dark cherry, coffee, dark chocolate, anise, cinnamon, cedarwood, and a touch of smoke or gunflint.
The wine delivers a medium to full-bodied experience with a rich, pure, and concentrated fruit core.
It features silky, velvety, and firm tannins balanced by fresh acidity, leading to a long, spicy, and flavoursome finish.
