Pétrus is an iconic wine estate in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, renowned for producing some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive red wines.

It is celebrated for its Merlot-based wines, which are known for their power, complexity, and longevity.

People considered Pétrus a minor Pomerol estate until hotel owner Madame Edmond Loubat gradually acquired it.

She became the sole owner by 1945.

From 1943, she collaborated with the negociant (merchant) Jean-Pierre Moueix.

Together, they established Pétrus as the world’s most renowned and sought-after red wine.

The Moueix family became the majority shareholders of Pétrus in 1969.

Pétrus’s intense and long-lived character arises more from its unique terroir than from heavy-handed winemaking.

The 20-hectare area of deep blue clay soils with a high iron content features the Pomerol “plateau.”

More than half of this unique “boutonnière” (“button hole”), a mound at 40 metres above sea level, Pétrus occupies.

The gentle slope allows rainwater runoff during wet vintages.

The moisture-rich layers below nourish the vines in dry years.

Winemakers create Pétrus more or less entirely from Merlot, though they apparently include up to 20% Cabernet Franc in older vintages.

1976 Petrus Pomerol

Wine enthusiasts highly seek the 1976 Petrus Pomerol, a mature Merlot-dominant Bordeaux known for its rich, intense, and complex flavours.

While not officially classified, experts consider Petrus a First Growth, and the vineyard produces its grapes from unique blue clay soils in Pomerol, with older vintages sometimes containing Cabernet Franc.

Wine critics generally regard the 1976 vintage as a pleasant, if not “great,” year.

The wine offers a full-bodied, decadent, yet intensely flavoured experience, and it has reached full maturity.
