Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards in the late 17th century.
In the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who had inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.
When the court of Versailles introduced Lafite, it reached record heights in demand for the wine.
The Marquis de Ségur earned the nickname “The Prince of Vines”.
In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château.
The Rothschilds have owned the estate ever since.
Lafite Rothschild boasts one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc.
It has 112 hectares that yield about 45,000 cases annually.
Château Lafite Rothschild 1961
The 1961 Château Lafite Rothschild is, indeed, a highly sought-after First Growth Bordeaux from the Pauillac appellation.
Moreover, wine enthusiasts know it for its refined, elegant, and medium-bodied profile, with notes of cedar, graphite, and dark fruit.
Many do not immediately think of the 1961 Bordeaux vintage as a heatwave, but the figures clearly show it was.
However, the very small crop – due to coulure – and an exceptionally dry year give the character of this superb year.
What is remarkable about the year as a whole is that the wines have such supple and elegant tannins.
This marked a milestone on the way to controlled fermentations, in that winemakers avoided over-extraction.
Therefore, everyone felt that the wines succeeded more across the region than might have been the case a few years before.
It seemed that volatile acidity had finally vanished.

In addition, tasting notes for the 1961 Château Lafite Rothschild highlight its elegance, complexity, and delicate balance rather than brute power.
Furthermore, one can expect classic, refined aromas of cedar and graphite, along with notes of tobacco and faded dark fruit.
Additionally, some tasters also report notes of damp earth (sous bois), black tea, violets, and forest floor.
Ultimately, the palate is medium-bodied and elegant, with balanced acidity and degraded tannins.
Wine critic Jane Anson described the 1961 Château Lafite Rothschild as a legendary and exceptional wine, rating it 97/100.
She noted that while it can show bottle variation, a particularly memorable tasting featured melted tannins, floral notes (like rose petals), soot, campfire, and autumnal fruits.
This 1961 Lafite is unusual for being 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
With over 60 years of age, the 1961 Lafite Rothschild is fully mature.
