The oldest document that mentions Chateau Latour dates from 1331.

Lord Pons granted an authorisation to Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.

As a result of successive marriages and inheritances, Alexandre de Ségur became the owner of Château Latour.

In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour commanded a worth of 4-5 times more than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.

By 1729, the ratio increased to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.

Château Latour exclusively produces wine from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average age of 60 years in the Enclos vineyard.

The heart of the Enclos produces the depth, elegance, and concentration we expect of Château Latour every year.

Here, the winemakers achieve optimal expression of the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) in terms of colour, richness, and freshness.

These wines require time – often a decade – before they become ready for drinking.

Château Latour is also renowned for its ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.

Very wet winter, but February was very mild.

The vines advanced a month ahead.

Flowering began on 12 May, but the fine weather during the day alternated with cold nights.

The cold hit the vineyard on May 29, when the vines bloomed, and frost affected them.

The frost completely froze the flowers, resulting in the loss of three-quarters of the harvest.

The month of July and the first three weeks of August generally did not provide very good conditions, with temperatures below normal.

Then, a period of continuous fine weather occurred from 24 August–28 September, and it was almost as dry as in 1949.

The Château Latour 1961 harvest occurred between 19–28 September, yielding low results.

Tastings after running-off suggested a great wine.

It presented a clean taste, bright color, richness, ripeness, roasting, and a full body.

Such colors had not appeared for a long time.

In the mouth, Château Latour 1961 shines phenomenally, full of fruit, structured, incredibly concentrated and perfectly balanced.

The tannins present themselves prominently, but they do not come across as aggressive.

The finish lasts very long.

It has barely reached its peak and will continue to improve.
