A HISTORY OF THE MACALLAN

The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, which the Gaelic word “magh” meaning fertile ground and “Ellan” from the Monk St.Fillan – who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400, inspired.

Farmers made whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.

Captain John Grant inherited the Estate in the 1760s.

He commissioned alterations to an existing tower house on the Estate – Easter Elchies House.

A former teacher, Alexander Reid leased the land at Easter Elchies in 1819.

He nurtured the land before establishing a distillery in 1824.

Roderick Kemp, a wine and spirits merchant, purchased The Macallan in 1892.

Kemp cemented the long association with sherry-seasoned casks.

Janet Harbinson became Managing Partner of the Distillery in 1918, investing cautiously to keep the business afloat during challenging decades.

On 25 February 1926, they laid down Cask 263 to mature. Subsequently, they bottled it six decades later as the record-breaking The Macallan 1926 60 Years Old.

In 1943, meanwhile, Managing Partner of the Distillery, Dr Samuel Allan Shiach, adopted the policy of conserving stocks, selling only to cover expenses.

Furthermore, time-honoured links with Spanish sherry oak cask makers and wine producers certified formal partnerships in the 1970s.

In addition, with a focus on selling The Macallan as a single malt, they published the first newspaper advertisement in The Times on 27th March 1980.

Later, in 1992, The Macallan purchased fishing rights to a stretch of the River Spey, one of Scotland’s foremost salmon fishing locations.

Moreover, excavation and building work of a new distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners began in 2014.

Finally, they opened the building in 2018.
