1955 wine gift – Kopke Colheita Port 1955 at Arden Fine Wines.
A journey in 1636 between Hamburg and Portugal begins a long story…
Nicolau Kopkë settled in Portugal as the Consul General of the Hanseatic League.
Two years later, in 1638, merchants shipped the first bottles of wine to northern Europe.
The purchase of a farm in the Douro in 1781 marked the transition from a wine buying company to a major producer.
The company gradually focused on Port Wine, which soon became its main business.
In 1828, Cristiano Nicolau Kopkë sided with the Liberal Party during the civil war.
This dedication to the concept of social progress has been shared by all the family’s successive generations.
He received the title of Baron of Vilar in 1836.
Ten years later, his nephew Joaquim Augusto Kopke became Baron of Massarelos.
In 1922, they acquired Quinta de São Luiz.
Since then, they have produced all Kopke’s DOC Douro wines at this location.
For many years, one of these traditions involved painting the Quinta’s stone walls white once a year.
These white walls represent pieces of history that people cherish to this day and highlight the Douro landscape in a unique way.

Tasting a vintage fine wine means tasting history.
In the case of this 1955 Kopke Colheita, it evokes a special event from 70 years ago – a birthday or anniversary.
It is a high-quality wine made from one single harvest.
A Colheita wine matures in oak barrels for periods that can vary, but never for less than seven years.
Best served chilled, it pairs wonderfully with desserts made with caramel, dried fruit, and spice, such as tarte tatin.
Or enjoy it with medium-strength cheeses.
Kopke Colheita Port 1955 makes an ideal 70th birthday or anniversary gift.
