Description
1955 vintage port for sale – 1955 Martinez Vintage Port at Arden Fine Wines.
D. Sebastian Gonzales Martinez founded the company in 1790.
Initially, he sold Port, cigars, and sherry from an office in the City of London.
Subsequently, John Peter Gassiot joined him in 1822.
Together, they created Martinez Gassiot and Company. Then, in 1834, they acquired a lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Moreover, John Gassiot had three sons, John, Charles, and Sebastian, who all became partners in the firm.
However, when Sebastian Gassiot died in 1902, he had no successors; consequently, the firm went up for sale. In 1916, Arthur Nugent handled the firm, followed by Donald MacLean until his death in 1939, and then by Gilbert Eastaugh.
Finally, Harveys of Bristol bought the company in 1961.
Then in 1966 Showerings, Vine Products and Whiteways Ltd (SVPW) bought Harvey’s, which Allied Breweries bought in 1968.
Allied-Lyons PLC changed its name in 1981 and changed to Allied Domecq PLC in 1994.
Since 2006, the Symington family has owned Martinez.
Declared by 26 shippers, 1955 was the largest declaration since 1927, and is one of the most underrated Vintages of the 20th Century.
A real pleasure to drink now, the best will last well into the 21st Century if well-cellared.
1955 Martinez Vintage Port makes an ideal 70th birthday or anniversary gift.
