Description
1955 Cockburn’s Vintage Port from Arden Fine Wines in London.
Declared by 26 shippers, 1955 was the largest declaration since 1927, and is one of the most underrated Port vintages of the 20th Century.
A real pleasure to drink now, the best will last well into the 21st Century if well-cellared.
“It doesn’t get any better than our Vintage Port” says Cockburn.
“If all the conditions are perfect and the port gods are smiling down on us, we declare a vintage year. Because of the unique microclimate of our vineyards, we sometimes declare vintage years when our neighbours don’t. It’s been known to raise the odd eyebrow but it’s just how we do things. Exquisitely rare and painstakingly created, our Vintage Port is a gift from our home to yours. And gifts are meant to be opened. Eventually.”
“Grip. It’s a term you’ll often come across when our ports are being described. The story goes that John Smithes, Cockburn’s renowned blender, taster and expert wine-spitter, coined the phrase during his time at Vila Nova de Gaia. It relates to a wine’s length and quality of finish – a characteristic he valued highly. In port and in life.”
